‘Black Out’ matinee set for Angelique Chéri’s
Berta, Berta on Sunday, August 10
WHAT:
The performance of Echo Theater Company’s West Coast premiere of Berta, Berta on Sunday, August 10 at 4 p.m. will be a “Black Out” matinee, an opportunity for an audience self-identifying as Black to experience the performance together, followed by a talkback with the playwright, director and cast. A sensuous love story by Angelica Chéri that was inspired by a prison chain gang song from Parchman Farm, the production is directed by Andi Chapman and stars DeJuan Christopher and Kacie Rogers in an electrifying two-hander. In 1920s Mississippi, Leroy has committed an unforgivable crime and is ready to accept his punishment: incarceration at Parchman. He has just one final wish before he’s caught – a chance to make amends with his long lost love, Berta. Their reunion swells from a quarrelsome conjuring of the past to an impassioned plot to escape their impending fate.
