Sex, Lies and Harold Pinter: Party Time and The Lover
Click here to download high-resolution photos
Veteran director Jack Heller (2023’s A Slight Ache) helms an evening of two rarely staged Pinter one-acts—both darkly comic, both unmistakably unsettling—in this visiting production at the Odyssey Theatre. In Party Time, affluent guests at a chic London gathering trade gossip and brag about wealthy pursuits while, just beyond the half-open door, an unjust regime enforces “order” with brutal force. The Lover shifts the tone, as a married couple enlivens their relationship by exchanging intimate accounts of their affairs—until Pinter’s sly, bittersweet twist reveals how fragile the boundaries between fantasy, power and desire truly are. Sizwe Bansi Is Dead / Fugard Festival
The Fountain Theatre presents Sizwe Bansi Is Dead, not seen in L.A. for over 50 years, as part of a summer-long, city wide festival celebrating Athol Fugard, the internationally acclaimed South African playwright whose work challenging that country’s system of apartheid made him a symbol of artistic resistance, and who declared the Fountain Theatre, where many of his plays premiered, his “artistic home on the West Coast.” It’s 1972 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and Sizwe Banzi’s passbook gives him just three days to find work, or he’ll be deported. As relevant today as it was when first written, this Tony-nominated play exposes the struggle for freedom and identity in apartheid-era South Africa, unraveling the brutal absurdities of everyday life under oppression. The play was written by Fugard together with South African actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona, who originated the roles and were jointly awarded the 1974 Tony Award for Best Actor. Directed by Simon Levy, Sizwe Bansi Is Dead will anchor a summer-long Fugard Festival that will see the Fountain partnering with other theater companies, high schools and colleges to present readings of Fugard’s work including The Island, Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act, The Road to Mecca, and Exits and Entrances.  The Fountain Theatre, 5060 Fountain Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90029; (323) 663-1525; fountaintheatre.com

Topanga Canyon Blvd., Topanga, CA 90290; $15-$60; (310) 455-3723; theatricum.com.
