Robert Heide: In Search of Lost American Playwrights.
Click here to download high-resolution photos
Odyssey Theatre Ensemble’s Thresholds of Invention series introduces L.A. audiences to daring playwright and Warhol collaborator Robert Heide. When Heide died on December 17, 2025, the theater community in downtown Manhattan paid tribute by recognizing his extraordinary achievement as one of the pioneer playwrights of the Off-Off Broadway era. Yet, although Heide’s plays had been performed in such legendary theaters as Cafe Cino, LaMama and Theater For The New City among others, his work was never produced in Los Angeles. An afternoon of readings from some of Heide’s short plays will right that wrong. Selections (subject to change) include Mother Suck, The Bed and Remember (preceded by an excerpt from Tropical in Key West). Odyssey Theatre, 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90025; (310) 477-2055 x2;

Romeo and Juliet

Re-set in New York City at the end of the 19th century against the backdrop of the Gilded Age, a time of explosive industrial growth, staggering inequality and rigid social divisions, Shakespeare’s most famous love story is both romance and warning. As we watch two young people caught up in an adult world shaped by class hatred and fear, we’re reminded that when humanity loses its way, the first casualties are compassion, connection, and hope for the future. Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, 1419 N. World premiere of The Great Clown Bank Show
Under the cracked neon glow of the Big Top, The Great Clown Bank Show erupts in a fever-dream spectacle of greed, glitter and grotesque excess. This anarchic circus-theater extravaganza follows the rise of the Greedy family — a scheming dynasty of powder-faced hustlers who transform their tiny carnival cashbox into the most powerful clown bank in America. Wildly funny, sharply satirical and packed with thrilling circus acts (a different guest performer every week), The Great Clown Bank Show skewers capitalist America with razor-toothed humor, exposing a world where wealth is the greatest magic trick of all — and everyone outside the ring is paying for it.
